Peanut Butter Banana Pupsicles – Recipe!

by Nancy E. Hassel, ThisFurryLife.com

Your pup will love to cool off with this homemade doggie ice cream!  This simple recipe is so easy to make – your dog will thank you for it and you will be happy because you know what exact ingredients are going in.

My dog Cody does not have any food allergies and does very well on the ingredients I put in this treat, emphasis on treat.  And of course you would only give your dog these in moderation, and know what you can feed your own dog.  You should always consult with your vet if you are not sure what your dog can eat or not eat.

I recently bought a few different silicone molds that is more than likely for making chocolates for humans, but I could not resist getting it for making a treat for my dog.

Because the yougurt, peanut butter, banana and oil combined, can be somewhat thick – I added a bit of 2% milk, to blend easier.  And these treats are frozen, so they stay fresh in the freezer since there is no preservatives in them.  (Cody loves ice cubes too, but these are easier to chew and enjoy and more nutrition than just frozen water).

The best thing about this is, you can come up with your own recipe specific for your pup.
But here’s what I did:

3/4 cup of organic plain greek yougurt with no additives or sugars.  Plain yogurt!

1 ripe banana cut up

2 heaping tablespoons of organic peanut butter (NO other ingredients but peanuts should be in any peanut butter you give to your dog!)

2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil

1/4  to 1/2 cup of 2% milk

Put in blender, food processor, Ninja – whatever blender you have, mix until somewhat smooth – doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t want to over mix this.

*TIP: Let the yogurt sit out for about 20 minutes before putting this recipe together.  Why? If you add very cold ingredients to the oil, it is harder to blend.
Here’s what it should look like after being blended:

TIP: Put the silicone mold on a small sheet pan to place in your freezer to freeze.  Otherwise it could spill since they are so pliable.

This is easy to pour into the silicone molds.  I used 2 different molds, one that is more likely for ice cubes and a fun smaller heart shape molds.  Since my dog is 60lbs the ice cube size are great for him.  If you have a small dog, I would suggest looking for much smaller molds.

You can then pop out the treats, and refill the mold, put the 2nd batch into the freezer.  If you have more than one dog, you can double the recipe and pop out the treats and put them in a plastic container.  I put  the treats in a container with wax paper in between the rows, to keep them from freezing together into one big treat.

Cody gets one every day, I don’t over do it – as it is a treat after all.

You can use any mold for this, and really any size, but I like these bite size treats – not too big or small.   This is a fun idea to get your kids involved in doing for their dog.  Summer project moms?   Happy summer and I hope your pup enjoys these!
