Four years ago Westminster Kennel Club introduced the Westminster Agility Championships where any dog, any breed or mix can compete in agility. Boy how that event has grown in four years!
This year the trials during the day, really felt like the championship competition that happens at night. The roar of the crowd when a dog flies through the course with precision and speed. The laughter when a dog stops to sneeze, sniff the ground, or worse, poop right on the course. That happened – it was very funny, poor pup!
Dogs of all ages were competing in agility, and too see some senior dogs having a blast in their own pace, go through the course, just melts your heart.
In addition to the agility on Pier 94, Westminster also hosts AKC’s Meet the Breeds – which was once again packed with people. I was very happy to see the TICA cats were back, honestly I didn’t realize they were going to be there, so it was a very nice surprise.
And of course the dog show itself on Monday and Tuesday, it is incredible to see so many different kinds of breeds in one place. You get to root for your favorite breeds, learn from meeting the owners in person, and be among so many dog enthusiats who are just as excited as you are to be there. It never gets old. I say it every year, if you have yet to be to Westminster, mark your calendars for next February and book your hotel rooms now if you’re coming in from out of town. It is a completely different experience in person vs. watching it on TV! Big congrats to Rumor the German Shepherd who won Best In show this year, and to the Irish Setter who took BIS Reserve.
I loved seeing that the AmStaff got 3rd place in the Terrier Group – that is a very big step in the right direction! For more pictures click here. Who were you rooting for to win?
